Nothing inspires more opinions than the question of what to feed your dog. I too am looking for answers. Innova? Canidea? Nurto? Eaglepack? Solid Gold? Something else? I'll take anyone's comments. But, I am looking for kibble. I'm not going to do a full raw diet. Top dressing or treat suggestions that are raw or something else maybe. Thoughts?

Hi Bugenhagen's mom!
If you go to www.gentlegiantrescue.com
they have their own food that they consider to be superior for large breed dogs...they require anyone that adopts a dog from them to have the dog eat ONLY that food...
The rescue is located in Norco, CA & is run by the former "Robin" character of the old Batman & Robin..you're heart will MELT looking at the videos!
Hope this helps!

Ahh, if I only knew the best food to feed! I will tell you that I have tried so many different ones, trying to find one that Kai (dane) will eat and thrive on. The best has been EVO (made by same company as Innova) but it is crazy expensive when feeding a dane. We've tried most "super premium foods" and at the suggestion of a dane breeder who has show danes, she said to try Pro Plan XL (for giant breeds). I must admit that it is finally something that Kai will eat and doesn't lose weight on. Good luck!!
Since we live in Germany we don't really have any suggestions for you...but we feed Ayla an all natural, cold pressed food which is made in Switzerland and sold only via a local pet food chain.
And by the way, I wanted to pass on a You Make My Day Award to you. Learn all about it on my blog :)
Newfie kisses!
Ayla
Wow! Beautiful Dane! Wwe'd love to have a romp session with a dog our own size!
Our dad has spent a lot of time researching foods. Here's his decisions:
1.Timberwolf
(Innova would be next but we couldn't tolerate it no matter what he did to transition it)
2. chicken soup for the dog lover's soul
3. solid gold (kibble only)
4. Eagle fish/canidae
5. ?nutro if you trust them.
Dad wont give us past 3.
Origen would be #1 if they didn't have citric acid. So if you don't mind that, it's by far the best.
Dad doesn't agree with the Great Dane Lady about citric acid. Basically her activities are funded by a dog food manufacturer who uses it and her arguments against Glickman's work are specious.
Chels is a baby, and eating 2 cups of kibble, and two cups of mince/vegetable mix twice a day..she also gets brisket bones throughout the week & a can of sardines on Sunday

A little late here, but if you are still looking...
A high percentage of the great dane show people and breeders are using what's called the "Blackwatch feed program", which is what we also use. Basically, it's Eagle Pack (many choices) plus dehydrated veggies and meat called "Honest Kitchen", plus supplements.
(more or less) People vary a little, but this is the basic program. You can find it here:

I personally think the kibble and probiotics are the most important , but see what you think. She is considered the current main authority on dane nutrition.
That said, ours had some food allergies, so we had to cut back to kibble only so far, unfortunately. She still looks great tho.
Also, you have a merle/harl, which is generally much bigger than the other colors, so he might eat more than she recommends. In addition, if your dog gets plenty of exercise, they need more food than she says. Her reasoning is good, tho, in general.
You have a cool looking dog! He looks like a lot of fun, and you take great pictures of him having that fun!!
Thanks for dropping by, by the way!! Hope you'll visit again.
